Presented by 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography, Portrait of Humanity™ is a global photography award conceived to show that across oceans and borders, there is more that unites us than sets us apart. Inspired by themes of individuality, community and unity, the 200 shortlisted images harness the power of photography to showcase the many faces of humanity, and the everyday moments that bind us together. The shortlist was curated from more than 10,00 entires from 36 countries.

“My photo selected by the jurors for the Portrait of Humanity 2020 Shortlist was taken during a second line procession in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. The Tremé is one of oldest African American neighborhoods in the U.S. and home to Congo Square, and is the birthplace of jazz. Famous musicians born in the Tremé include Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden, Sidney Bechet, and Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews among many others.” —Jon Wollenhaupt

About Portrait of Humanity
“Portrait of Humanity is a global initiative by 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography. First launched in 2018 in collaboration with Magnum Photos, Portrait of Humanity serves as a timely reminder, that despite our many differences, we are able to unite as a global community through the power of photography, to create one of the greatest collaborative photography exhibitions in history.
At its core, Portrait of Humanity is a celebration of our shared values: Individuality, Community, and Unity.
In our first edition, we invited photographers of all levels to show us the world through their eyes, to capture the many faces of humanity, and to document the universal expressions of life; laughter, courage, moments of reflection, journeys to work, first hellos, last goodbyes, and everything in between.
As part of Portrait of Humanity 2020, 200 shortlisted photographs will be published in the Portrait of Humanity Book, Vol.2, and will be exhibited in Space by Sent Into Space and transmitted through the universe in binary code — with the potential to be picked up and decoded by another civilisation! 30 winning images and three winning bodies of work will be exhibited at various locations across the world. Up to 100 commended images will also be exhibited digitally on Clear Channel screens internationally to be seen by millions.”
