Work is an essential source our self-worth; it contributes to the security of our families and to the common good of society. In many cultures, the work of artisans helps preserve centuries-old cultural traditions that maintain and promote social cohesion. Yet for every person who finds some degree of personal fulfillment and economic prosperity from their work, there are millions for whom their labor relegates them to the fringes of society, giving them little chance of escaping a life of unrewarding, sometimes dangerous, often arduous, low-paid jobs.
The candid portraits of people at work in this series have been captured over the course of more than 10 years, in multiple cities across the United States and Europe. The images put the viewer in touch with a wide array of essential human emotions—some that are readily recognizable and some that are amorphous and ineffable. In each case, the viewer is provided a window into the subjects’ world and an opportunity to connect with them in an immediate and intimate way.
