Street Photography: Fostering a Deep Engagement with an Environment

I am endlessly inspired by street photography’s ability to capture the essence of a place, revealing its character, rhythms, and the human interactions that define it. Walking the street of a bustling city teaming with the of drama of everyday life, I feel a deep and intense engagement with my surroundings. Once I have spent enough time in a particular city, subtle and sometimes undefined narratives begin to emerge in my images that reflect a unique sense of place that reveal more than geography or architecture. Ultimately, it is the human element that ties a collection of images together, creating a dynamic relationship between the observer, the observed, and the environment.

Over many years of practice, I have developed —as is common with all good street photographers — an intuitive sense of timing and composition that is coupled with a heightened sense of perception. Those hard-won skills have enabled me to explore more deeply the subtle and fleeting essence of human presence in an environment. For my own practice, I find it most satisfying when I have succeeded in capturing an image that communicates something undefined, an image that speaks to an essential yet mysterious human emotion.

The cities that I have had the good fortune to photograph often include San Francisco, New York City, New Orleans, Rome, Venice and Napoli. I have culled from those places many images, some that have won awards or have been published. I am pleased to share some of those images here.
